Pull It Out

The design of many kitchens does not allow for easy access to pots and pans. One of the simplest things you can do to make accessing these items is to install pull out shelves.

You can find pull out drawer organizers at stores such as The Container Store or online at www.organize.com.
If you are looking for something custom - there are companies that specialize in making and installing these for you.

In this kitchen that I organized, I had one of our vendors install two pull out shelves. Be sure to spend the few extra dollars to get the extenders so the drawers come all the way out.

Rather than just having the vendor insall the drawers where they think they should go - which is typically at equal proportions in the cupboard - determine first what you want to live on the bottom pull out. Determine the height of the tallest item that will live on the bottom shelf and then have the vendor place the next shelf with just enough space to clear the bottom shelf.

Stacking pots and pans inside each other take less room than stacking them with the lids turned upside down. Instead, store the lids separate - perhaps in an "organizer" designed to store lids.

Another way to keep pan lids organized is to have a plate rack on the wall that has lids on it. My husband made me one specifically for lids that has four shelves (each with a brace for the lids to lean outward against), and also has some hooks on it to hang colanders from. Above the rack, we have an old wagon wheel rim with pots hanging from hooks. Both items are painted a cheery red, and I always put pans and lids back in the exact same place so I can grab the right ones instantly (yes, Laura, that's anal, I know!) And, no more digging in cabinets or through stacks of lids. I don't have many cabinets, so this frees up that space for bowls and other items.
